Around the Interwebz-7 links I liked this Weekend

Posted in Blogroll at 9:34 pm by deRomilly

Every so often I still get a chance to wander around the net and read. (Read: I had a long weekend because of Thanksgiving!) My favorite finds:

  • Mary Corbet at NeedleandThread.com has been doing a series on stitching letters (this link is to #9, and she’s doing other things between, so be warned, you may get sidetracked). Very nice series of tutorials – especially if you ever want to stitch a poem or such. She’s also got a new “fan flowers” alphabet for monograms (this is to the index of all of them) going. Very nice.
  • QUITE a while back, Sharon Boggon posted a wonderful video of her daughter Eve, performing stilt and trapeze. I loved the lyrical quality of the movements – and all done on stilts. Sharon, you have a wonderfully talented daughter. But then again, I suspect you KNOW that! (It’s worth watching again if you haven’t seen them yet.)
  • Lakshmi has recently (within the last month or two – it’s been a while!) completed the embroidery on a very pretty Indian garment. I love how the silk shines! And the stitches look perfect. Fly and lazy daisy (detatched chain).  In a more recent post, she created a dress for her daughter in less than 15 days. I am amazed by this woman!
  • Plays with needles, whom a commenter referred me to in my post about favorite blogs, is on vacation until Monday. But her last post before getting on her cruise ship was on her needle’s garden. More amazing eye candy!
  • I recently found the Hand Embroidery Network online. Interviews and eye candy from many embroiderers. I think this one’s going to take more than one cup of tea for me to explore in detail. Also tips, tricks, how tos, and classes!
  • LMDesigns has been embroidering a desk clock. Very pretty. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product!
  • Back in October, MeggieCat posted a link to paper lantern instructions from an old School Arts Magazine found on Google books. Cool project idea!

And now, I’m out of time. Much fun surfing the web and sharing some of my finds with you. But now, off to bed, because I have to go back to the day job tomorrow, much as I’d like to spend even more time stitching, surfing, and sharing!

10 Inspirational Needlework Blogs

Posted in Blogroll at 5:59 pm by deRomilly

This is a list of some of the needlework blogs I read on a regular or semi-regular basis. Things I really really like to spend time on when I can.
So, in no particular order, my 10 favorite inspirational needlework blogs.
  • Pintangle – Sharon Boggin’s blog. Between this and her stitch dictionary, my stitching life could be complete. :)
  • Annie’s Crazy World – I found this site through Sharon’s. Annie is one of Sharon’s Australian friends, and follows her sampler and her crazy quilting escapades. Very cool eye candy.
  • Grumpy Shopkeeper – Sally Webster keeps a small shop in Edinborough, and blogs about her adventures with knitting, crochet and other needlework stuff.
  • Virginie - yes, it IS in French. Look at the pictures if you don’t read French. :)
  • Moonsilk -Just cool needlework to look at.
  • Rooted In Mississippi – Rissa stitches and bellydances in Mississippi.
  • Elmsley Rose - Megan is learning historical embroidery by making a beautiful sampler of stitches.
  • Needle ‘N Thread - If you’re interested in the broad needlework world like I am, you’ll want to keep up with Mary Corbet’s blog.  Pictures, giveaways, and lots and lots of good information.
  • Witchypoo - Lovely stuff. Just beautiful work, in everything – art journaling, needlework, and such.
  • Linn Skinner – she’s been off and on because of health issues, but Linn Skinner provides really cool links, and she’s a gem of a source for historic needlework information.

My Father the Techie!

Posted in Blogroll at 7:00 am by deRomilly

I mentioned a few posts ago that if she were still alive, I thought my mother would be out here shimmying along with me, probably leading the dance troupe, actually.

She and my Dad are very much alike in their love of life, if not of dancing (he just doesn’t get it, though he attended every one of my ballet performances for over 20 years just to support me.) I think he appreciates the bellydance more, especially when we throw in the comedy!

However, he is, unlike most 75 year olds (which is his age as of March), extremely technologically savvy. He was a technical writer, writing manuals for heavy equipment for Weyrhauser and then for animatronic machinery for Delta Tau. He understands more electronics than I could ever hope to – and has a general amateur radio license, which he’s had for over 50 years. OK, so he didn’t have the general license until they changed the rules 10 years or so ago. But he’s avid. He introduced me to computers and programming when I was 11, and to what became the internet soon thereafter with Compuserv.

And now he’s discovered the rest of the web. True to form, he’s jumped in with both feet. If you’re at all interested in how one lives well with both diabetes and kidney failure, go read his blog. If I know him, he’ll cover everything – from muzzle loading guns to medical procedures, to metalsmithing. And I know he’s starting a new blog devoted to muzzle loading. Leave him a comment. He may claim to be an introvert, but he gets a kick out of people reading his work. Most true writers do!

Dad’s Blogs…Yup. He’s now got multiples!

In a Minute Ago, Sharon B

Posted in Blogroll at 8:23 am by deRomilly

I’d been without time to read my blogs for a while and when I came back, I couldn’t find Sharon B’s blog! I was horrified.  Just a little wandering to her main website later and I discovered she’s moved again. Back to a custom url.

If you are having trouble finding her, she’s now at www.pintangle.com. I’m amending my link in the blogroll, too. :) She’s moved all the comments and old posts there, too, so you won’t miss much if anything, either.
